Confrontation with the sculpture can provoke commitments to ancestors and future generations, as well as to the Earth itself. The monolith, which was the symbol of an evolutionary leap in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), here provokes a reflection on whether it is time for mankind’s involution, its self-limitation in the exploration of natural resources and technology. The rectangular form of black granite contrasts with the trunk of a black oak. The oak is steeped in symbolism, evokes sacred connotations and was sometimes worshipped by people. However, the juxtaposition of these elements in the sculpture does not determine what we are dealing with.
